Reflections: 27 April 1999

Dateline: Rome

Bill Clinton, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Services?

I DON'T THINK SO!

FIRST, bombing the Serbs after announcing that no troops would be committed for a ground war, is tantamount to Muhummed Ali announcing to Joe Frazier, "Smokin' Joe, I'm not gonna use my left hand in this fight."

Clinton is a typical Man-In-Blue-Suit who views other world leaders through the vantage point of Washington, D.C.

A GOOD RULE: Know Your Enemy!

Did he know that Serbs have been slaughtered before and found only glory in defeat? They find glory in defeat better than anyone. Like the ghetto gambler who announces: "I just lost ten thousand!" Translation: "I lose better than you!"

The Balkans were the flash point for both WW I and WW II. After some 40 years of communist oppression, the clannish hatreds and pent-up ethnic loathing exploded in a civil war for which we, and the rest of the "free world," had little consensus and few answers.

And now we are at Pseudo-war again.

IF YOU'RE GONNA FIGHT A WAR, FIGHT IT FULL-OUT — NO HOLDS BARRED. NO WORRIES ABOUT "COLLATERAL DAMAGE." OTHERWISE, DON'T FIGHT AT ALL . . . DON'T EVEN TALK ABOUT IT.

AS A VIET NAM WAR PROTESTER, CLINTON SHOULD HAVE RECUSED HIMSELF FROM ANY DECISIONS REGARDING THIS NATO MILITARY ACTION.

WALKING AROUND HERE IN ITALY, I'm ashamed to be an American. We just can't seem to get it right.

If Slobodan Milosovich is a war Criminal, declare him so and let the UN War Crimes Tribunal deal with him. Instead, Clinton and Madeline Albright negotiate with him on the one hand, demonize him on the other and bomb the people who also are victims of his regime . . . his OWN people!

Leadership in wartime has nothing to do with politics, polls and punditry. It's making tough decisions with only one set of parameters: RIGHT and TRUTH!

DENVER, COLORADO

The Littleton murders were acts of cowardice by deranged teens warped by the strains of being on the outside looking in, The Jerry Springer Syndrome and the factor of adolescents caught in the web of video game violence.

There are no easy answers. As a Nation, we need to be a little more introspective regarding our culture and values. Parental involvement and gun control (the weapons used for the carnage were purchased by an 18 year old) seem to be the issues that we need to discuss.

My Prayers and best wishes go out to the brave heroes and survivors who are left to rebuild their lives and the community in the wake of this tragedy.

AND, FINALLY, IN SPORTS

GOOD-BYE, JOHN "WAYNE" ELWAY . . .
SO LONG, WAYNE GRETZKY
AND . . . "DAMMITT" TO DARRYLL STRAWBERRY!

THE BEST NBA TEAM IN LA TODAY IS THE LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS!

THIS WILL BE MY LAST LAKER POSTING FOR THIS SEASON. I FULLY EXPECT THEM TO NOT WIN ANOTHER GAME THIS SEASON AND GET SWEPT IN THE PLAYOFFS BY ANYONE THEY PLAY!

As many of you know, I'm not a Shaq fan.

Granted, he is a great offensive weapon if used correctly.

But he is uncoachable.

He can't shoot free throws.

And now it's clear to me that he went over the head of Vice President Jerry West and lobbied several player moves that have turned my beloved team into the laughing stock of the NBA.

Under then-coach, Del Harris, Shaq rendered Elden Campbell ineffective by badmouthing him and refusing to play with him. He forced the trade of point guard Nick Van Exel ("It's- him-or-me"-style, putting the team in an untenable bargaining position so they really got nothing for their All-Star point guard.) Now they don't have a real starting point guard for the first time in my memory. He lobbied owner Jerry Buss (inventor of the ZIP-LOCK BAG) to sign Dennis Rodman, a signing I agreed with until Dennis lost interest in a team with an immature "star" and without a strong coach (Kurt Rambis apologized to Shaq after benching him with 40 seconds in a game — a good move!), or a winning formula. Shaq engineered (lobbied) for the trade that sent Eddie Jones and Campbell to Charlotte for Glen Rice and JR. Reid.

Now after he got "the team (he) wanted" they can't stop anyone. With Eddie and Elden, went the defense. Dennis Rodman was fired so offensive rebounding suffered. They are 4 out of their last 11 games and in a downward spiral.

Then Sunday came the bomb!

The headline read:
"DR. SHAQ GROWS IMPATIENT WITH THE KOBE EXPERIMENT!"

Speaking to reporters he is quoted as saying, "You guys know the real problem. You're just too scared to write about it." He went on to further "ass" himself: "What is this, an experiment? Nobody waited for me when I came into the league. The pressure was there as soon as I started to play. That's my job. Why wait? I'm not going to be here that long that I want to wait years for him to figure it out."

FIGURE OUT WHAT, SHAQ? JUST WHAT DID THE CHILD PRODIGY DO THAT COULD CAUSE THE DEMISE OF A ONCE STORIED NBA TEAM?

ANSWER (In Reality) KOBE IS HIS OWN MAN (Child)! Shy and a loner off the court, he isn't a member of O'Neal's "Posse." He doesn't cater to the demands of Shaq to pound the ball inside as the first option on every offensive set. Shaq says Bryant plays "wild" -- meaning he makes a lot of turnovers.

KOBE HAS ONLY 29 MORE TURNOVERS — ON THE SEASON — THAN SHAQ.

SHAQ HAS MISSED 207 FREE THROWS WHICH IS ROUGHLY OVER 80 "TURNOVERS." MISSED FREE THROWS ARE NOT OFFICIAL TURNOVERS BUT MISSING THEM EQUALS "NO SHOT ATTEMPT IN AN OFFENSIVE SET" THE SAME AS A TURNOVER!

FACT #3:
SHAQ HAS MORE TURNOVERS THAN THE SUPPOSEDLY "WILD" KOBE. THE ONE PLAYER THAT MR. O'NEAL BLAMES FOR THE SUB-PAR SEASON. "THE LEADER" IS FINGER-POINTING WHEN THINGS ARE NOT GOING WELL.

JEALOUSY IS A SICK EMOTION. AND THE RAMIFICATIONS ARE THAT THE WEAK TEAMMATES ARE FEELING AS IF THEY HAVE TO TAKE SIDES. THE WEAK COACH (RAMBIS) HAS SIDED WITH O'NEAL. SCAPEGOATING IS THE WORST SIN OF A LOSE

JERRY WEST NEEDS TO REASSERT HIMSELF. AND I MEAN RIGHT NOW!

SOLUTION: I AM STILL THINKING THAT MUSIC IS THE MEANS BY WHICH GOD SPEAKS ON THE LEVEL OF OUR HUMANITY. WE SHOULD ALL SIT DOWN AND LISTEN TO SOME REAL MUSIC! LET IT PLAY! LET THE MUSIC PLAY . . . AND LOUDLY! AND . . .

AND . . .  MAY PEACE RE-ASSERT ITSELF IN OUR WORLD. LOVE, LIGHT, POWER AND MUSIC!
