A History of Design for Communication
“‘Form follows function’ — that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.”
— Frank Lloyd Wright
Don was born the eldest son of
college
professors and into an extended family known for its creative spirits. The
Garlock home was always filled with music and Don's parents encouraged the
slightest interest shown in the arts... (music, drawing & painting,
sculpture, theatre, falconry) by providing the musical instruments and art
tools and books and moral support (and understanding) requisite for such
pursuits. Don's folks knew from his earliest years that creativity flowed
in his veins. And Don grew up on numerous college campuses across the country
— tremendous opportunities for exposure to, and immersion in, the
arts, which Don eagerly absorbed. But his parents also drilled the finer
points of proper English into his young head, requiring him to read and
write volumes.
A keen eye and demonstrated artistic prowess even before grade school indicated that Don had more than marginal ability. But his father's scholarly work in communication (theory and practice) was brought to bear and thus began a discipline of writing and designing for communication that continues to this day.
From the first professional work in the mid-1970s, (when Don was still in high school), through college, the burgeoning tech revolution and more, Don has diligently applied his God-given abilities and training to numerous disciplines: music, branding & advertising, printing, packaging, fundraising, marketing, architecture, political campaigns, direct mail, radio & television production and broadcasting, theatre, set design, books, newspapers, magazines, law enforcement support, education, the Internet, even becoming a master falconer.
Seasoned professional experience over more than three decades, coupled with a singular background, have prepared Don to be uniquely qualified to tackle myriad projects for companies large and small.
As you investigate these pages, you are cordially invited to consider how you might apply the breadth and scope of Don's talent and experience to your next project and to your distinct advantage.
